The file does not have proper content to reconnect
Hi everyone
Before returning a rented mac used to edit a feature, I have copied all the project files, clips etc of the feature to an external drive and have brought it to my studio where I am checking that I can open the project on a different computer and there is nothing missing.
I went through the reconnection process as expected, however, a small number of clips gave this message: “The file does not have proper content to reconnect to
at time I clicked OK for all the clips. These clips now show as white in the timeline and show the Media Offline message in the Canvas when the playhead plays over these clips in the timeline. Oddly, sometimes only the audio tracks of the clip are affected, sometimes both audio and video tracks and sometimes the video track only! And there are some examples where the video and 3 of the 4 audio tracks of the clip are affected.
Does anyone know what I need to do to fix?
The project was cut in FCP 5.1 on a Mac Dual Core 2.66 Intel and my computer runs FCP 6 on a Mac Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5. The film was shot on HD but downrez’d to SD – DV Pal 25fps for editing.

If you use Media Manager to copy all files used in the project or in your timeline over to the external drive, the files do not require a reconnect, instead the FCP database tracks the files as though they’d never moved.

thanks for your advice. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that it would have been better to have created the project backup via Media Manager instead of copying the files to the external drive via Finder.
As the original copy took most of the day, I would like to avoid re-doing this if I can. I guess I can just replace the problem clips as I have the masters (and other parts of the clips exist without any problems elsewhere in the timeline!). But I’d love to know what caused FCP to decide that some clips from the same master file could reconnect while others could not!

that’s telling FCP to leave the clips un-connected.
do the reconnect again, and this time choose “Continue”
maybe try one clip and see what happens before doing the lot.what’s going on with those clips?

Correct! And keeping track of every file is essentially a no brainer, something computers are very good at, while we humans are not.

Its a database issue. Most NLEs flake out when files are moved manually, its not an isolated FCP thing.

I had a play around with manually replacing the problem clips but I found this created video & audio to get out of sync, so I will take your advice and redo the backup using Media Manager, as I don’t want to disturb any of the editor’s work.

they do act weird, end can have sync issues when re-conectingwell here’s a thought:
use Media Manger to move JUST THE CLIPS YOU NEED.
\no need to do the whole show again just for a couple of files.you can be very selective with MM.
select a few clips in your timeline,
open MM, and you are just dealing with the selected clips.
say you want a new project made,
and when it opens the clips will appear in a timeline.that should save you a bunch of time
when you make your initial selection,
put a bit of slug at the head of the timeline & also select that.
that will also appear in the new project,
and you can then select all in the new timeline,
and paste into the original one on some upper tracks. (good idea to colour them too, i guess)
having the slug place-holder at the head of the timeline will allow you to paste from the head of the problem timeline, and all the new clips will be in synccheers,
