The Evil Dead 2 – Book self-scribing effect (How is this done?)
Hi, i am intrested in the effect used in The Evil Dead 2 during the introduction sequence. The effect can be seen here (Skip to 0:35):

Now i understand the text can be mostly done using the stroke effect but i was more intrested in how the drawings were also done.
I also understand they likely used stop motion for this sequence taking pictures progressively as the image was drawn, but i was wondering if such techniques can be achieved using after effects.

You can reveal items like that with animated mask shapes or by animated paint strokes (painting on the alpha channel).

You are correct, that was stop animation and hand-drawings. If you have the images, you could use an the eraser tool to erase the image then animate backwards so it draws on. Conform it to 10-15FPS and it would look like what Raimi did.
As far as the drawings you need to find yourself an artist who can draw for you.
