  • The Culprit Of Extremely Large Project Files

I am facing the seemingly daunting task of figuring out why my project files are so large and could use some help in discovering the factors that determine a project’s file size.

I started the project with the idea that everything for 4 hour long episodes of a 6 stream multicam DVCProHD show would be contained in one project. Upon multiple system crashes and perusing the cow, I quickly realized this wasn’t the best idea. I broke the project file into four smaller projects containing only the media and show sequence related to the particular episode with a modicum of success. Episodes 1, 2, and 3, while still over 200 mb (including graphics which are contained in separate project files) behaved nicely and allowed me to continue to work. Episode 4 however is another story. The project contains the sequence and associated media only is a 404 mb file that FCP does not like. It only opens the file if the media is offline. Does anyone know what the culprit of such a large project file would be and how I might be able to correct the problem so I can successfully complete a graphic pass and have an editable version of the timeline to make changes in the future.

    Thanks Everybody,

    1) clips. Every unique clip/quicktime adds weight. I found this out when we started on some P2 projects where thousands of unique clips were being generated. Not much you can do about this… break up projects into sets of dailies and open them all

    2) cuts. keeping a backlog of every single roughcut adds up fast. When you’re moving along and know you won’t need cuts 1-25 b, rev a, version 4, agency preferred…. save an increment of your project and delete all those old cuts.

Multiple sequences add weight…as do multiclips and titles…titles especially as there is no media made for them, they just exist as part of the project file. Length of sequences add weight too.

Would still frames created in final cut pro have any adverse effect on a project file’s size?

Absolutely. Again, no media is created, so it is a file that is managed by FCP.

    man, that has to change.
