  • The correct frame rate for the USA (!)

I’ve shot stuff for the US for a long time now so I should know the answer to this – but I don’t.

Being in the UK I originally shot some HDV at 50i – I went into FCP and output 1920 x 1080 – final display was eventually from a blu-ray disc through a 1280 x 720 projector. I found through trial and error – given the path and what the footage was captured on – that 1920 and not 1280 gave the best resolution. The choice of projector is to do with budget and luminance.

Now this project has to come to the USA but can’t be re-shot.

So there’s a 50i 25 fps file that could be pushed through compressor, toast or encore into a US 23.98 or 29.97 (or even a 60i timeline or 59.94) and eventually come into a blu-ray disc for playback through 1280 x 720 projector

Or I could go back to fcp and make a timeline and drop the original set of images into one of the US HDV frame rates (which one?), output a 1920 file then drop it into toast or encore.

My question is, given the original footage, what pathway should I take to maintain best resolution through to display?

A hardware conversion device like a Terranex converter. These costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and there are Post houses all over the world who own them. For the best resolution, you simply take your finished PAL master to this post house and ask them to convert the file to NTSC 1080 HD. 23.98 or 29.97 is up to you, generally I go with 29.97 for NTSC broadcast.

1080 is a better resolution for BluRay than 720. We convert all our 720 project to 1080 before authoring a BluRay disc.
