which format is better TGA or PNg??

    We create Architectural walkthroughs ..

When we render image sequences out of 3ds Max with the intention of compositing and post producation to them in After Effects. Is there any reason to choose PNG over TGA. Still we are using TGA sequences.. so we should go for PNG or tga is good enough.

    Thanks in advance.

PNGs are smaller but take longer to render. TGAs take more space but are faster to render. They should be similar quality wise.

It depends if you are rendering compressed or uncompressed TGAs.

Uncompressed TGA will create larger filesizes than PNG (which uses lossless compression) but the quality should be indistinguishable.

Compressed TGA can be smaller than PNG but the quality is likely to be worse, possibly a lot worse, especially with photographic images.

PNG can store 16 bit-per-channel images; TGA is limited to 8 bpc.

You could all-out and use a format like EXR which supports floating-point storage. Then, setting your Ae project to 32bpc, you can have a lot more control over your lighting. See more on high dynamic range here:

I’ll add an upvote for EXR – it’s the option that makes the best sense for 3D renders, especially if you want to get into multi-pass. And the compression is very efficient.

TGA is a very antiquated option.
