  • TGA frames to video sync issues- please help!!

    Hi All,

Hoping for some wisdom/insight- we took a miniDV capture (NTSC 29.97) and brought the footage into After effects (length: 12;24;22), then exported it as individual TGA frames (22320 frames to be exact, exported with the Use comp’s franme rate(29.97) render setting) for retouching and so forth. A lot of work went into these, so we need to salvage them.

Trying to bring the TGA sequence back into AE to match the original footage ends up with a shorter comp (12;24;00, 30fps) that doesn’t match the video or audio of the original when laid on a layer above. Not sure how exactly to handle this to get everything to sync up.

    Please help? Thanks in advance.

That’s easy. Select the TGA sequence, and file>interpret footage>main. Reinterpret the sequence as 29.97 fps.

Since a sequence has no frame rate (it’s just a bunch of stills with convenient numbering), there’s no guarantee that AE will interpret it as you want. It assumes 30fps. You should be able to change that assumption by altering the “interpretation rules.txt” file.

Steve, you’re a life-saver, thanks very much. I thought we had already tried reinterpreting the footage (and failed), but apparently not, because it’s working like a charm.

Now for another question, if you don’t mind- any way to get AE to assume there’s are alpha channels in a sequence of frames, even if some frames do and others don’t? (in particular, the first frame does not have an alpha… we tried getting AE to reinterpret footage to force assuption of an alpha channel, but the choices were greyed out).

I suppose the other alternative would be to import the footage in groups based on the presence of an alpha, but .. oy. 🙂 Lots of varied frame sequences.

Thanks again for your timely knowledge.

I haven’t run across that problem before, so I don’t know if AE looks to the first image or needs to see that all images are 32-bit TGAs with alpha.

So … can you re-render the first frame with an alpha to fool AE on import?
