Text Tool
When I use my text tool, it doesn’t do anything. I type my text and the name of the layer changes to the text I typed but the text won’t show up in my comp view. I just get these red translucent boxes where my text should be. Somebody please help me!

Very strange! For obvious reasons, check that your text isn’t the same colour as your background and that Scale and Opacity are not 0.
If these fail, then start on a new composition and a new text layer.
And if that fails, delete your prefs.

My only guess would be that the fill is set to none in the character window, and the stroke is set to the same color as the background.

Hmmmm. . I checked my settings and opacity. all”s good. How would I reset my preferences to default? This is the weirdest issue I’ve had with AE. I don’t get anything but translucent red boxes.

You would have to delete your preferences….on a windows box they are in : c/windows/documents and settings/your username/application data/Adobe/After effects. If you do not see the application data folder, then you have to set windows to see hidden files and folder in the folder options in the tool menu.
If you are on a Mac, well someone else can surely help you…..I really don’t know Macs….sorry

To delete startup preferences, hit the following key combo – CTRL+ALT+SHIFT when AE stratups. Keep those keys depressed until you see a dialog prompting you to confirm the deletion of AE’s Startup preferences.
On the Mac, the key combo is CMD+OPT+SHIFT
