    Hi All,

I am trying to create a text effect on a picture of a theater curtain. I have the pic, the text and the path done in the project but i cant work out how to make it look like a light is shining the text onto the curtain and the text is moving in and out with the folds of the curtain as it moves from one side to the other. I hope that makes sense! any help would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Mark

If you choose the Displacement Map method, and the curtains alone don’t do the job, consider making a displacement map made of alternating strips, each with a gradient.

For example, the convex curtain part should be a tall strip, white fading to black on the left and right edges. The concave part would be the opposite. To make the gradient, take a strip-like solid, apply Ramp, then apply Curves and make the Curve like a parabola: an arch.

You may need to tweak the Ramps for the first two strips to get the Displacement looking right. Naturally, all these strips would be in a comp, which would then be loaded into the main comp where it becomes the Displacement Map for the text layer.

This could be a pain, squeezing each strip to match uneven folds in the curtain, but hey — you love this stuff!

Thanks to all for your replies, i thought that the Christmas break may slow the responses. I ended up using the displacement effect and just tweaked the level of it, the red curtains with dark shadows provided enough contrast. Thanks alot and you’re right I love this stuff.
