  • Text Rippling – Similar to water waves

Imagine the smooth motions of gentle waves of water. I have a text slate where I would like it to have a bit of that feel. Just basic white text on black background, but I’d like the text to ‘wave/ripple’ just a bit to add some motion to the slate.

The things I found on the site were for concentric water drop motions. I’m thinking of more directional motions (e.g. left to right wave).

    Apply WaveWorld to a solid.
Use the solid as a displacement map.
It is lovely, programmable, utterly controllable and supremely ultrarealitistic.

WaveWorld is complex because it is so cool. Not for the timid.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

waveworld is an excellent wave simulator… i might also suggest using it in conjunction with caustics for more realism of displacement… it can also give your waves highlights, or even a reflecting sky, if that is what you’re after. but what bogie said about wavworld goes for caustics too… they are not the easiest plugins to use, but excellent non the less.

if you want something easy, that can create a watery ripple-like movement, turbulent displace may work quite well, and it is very easy to use…. its settings are a bit like fractal noise, animate the evolution property, then adjust the amount, size and complexity.

with turbulent displace, you’ll at least be able to see if this will work for you in about 5 minutes… with waveworld it might be more like an hour.

Thanks bogie & moldy! I’ll try Wave World first and see how it goes. But sounds like turbulent displace will be easier for me :D. I’ll try using the caustic filter too. Thanks!
