  • Text Motion messed up after render…

Posted by Jesse Chapman on June 1, 2011 at 7:45 pm

    Hi everyone,

First time posting in this forum but I’ve found a couple other answers here before and I’m very grateful to you all.

Today my problem has to do with a simple text motion that is giving me problems. I used a template that fcp offers but wasn’t satisfied with its effect so I decided to modify it. I extended the middle section (so it’d be onscreen longer) by slowing down that part, then I cut and pasted the beginning part (the way the text first appears on screen) and reversed it and put it at the end so it would go off screen the same way. I have to render to see the effect in real time but I scrolled through the final edit of the effect frame-by-frame and it looked exactly how I wanted it…. HOWEVER, after rendering to watch it in real time it was just messed up. The text was moving differently than how it previewed frame-by-frame…

How is that possible? What am I doing wrong? I’ve never had this problem before. Anyway have a clue as to what I could have done, I’d very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

[Dave LaRonde] “I’m sorry to learn that you’re having problems, but the term “messed up” isn’t the greatest description of what’s happening. There’s no way to make a diagnosis. We don’t know if the text is jumping around the screen, grew purple hair, robbed a bank or ran off with your Significant Other.

Can you elaborate on what you mean?”

    Caution Dave,
You may be accused of being one of those “bitter old people who never answer direct questions”, or of causing “unhelpful clutter”.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
    You should be suitably impressed…

Yeah, I thought I was being specific when I said “The text was moving differently than how it previewed frame-by-frame… ” I didn’t think “how it moved” was relevant. If indeed it is, I will try to elaborate in a moment. But my confusion is: WHY would my text motion graphics look one way when I scrub through them frame-by-frame (pre-rendered) then behave differently after I render them??? That is really my question.

The difference is kind of complicated to explain but I’ll try. As I said, I modified a fcp text motion template. Originally text “materialized” on screen in a certain way but after it fully materialized I wanted it to stay on screen longer so I chopped off the “entrance” and “exit” of the text motion and slowed the speed of the middle section so it would appear to remain on screen longer. Also, originally the text would “materialize” then “dissolve” but I wanted the text to dissolve the exact same way it materialized, so I got rid of the end “dissolve”, I reversed the “materialization” and stuck that at the end. I did that for two separate groups of text… AFTER RENDERING – the first text group materialized then dissolved quickly, then jumped to the slowed down section of just the text on screen… The second text group showed nothing at all during the materialization and dissolve segments and just “appeared” on screen fully materialized and then disappeared with no dissolve. The thing is they worked exactly as I wanted when I previewed them frame-by-frame so I don’t know why rendering screwed them up.

I hope that was clear enough. I tried explaining the best I could. Thanks for any help anyone might offer!

Did you do this in Motion or FCP?
Can you post some of the video?
    Whats the codec, timeline settings?
