A 3D program? Invigorator? *giggle* Sorry, you’re looking for an easy solution where there is none. There is simply no built-in method or effect in AE that could achieve it. So sink yolur teeth again into that ribbon text tute and try to figure it out. If you have the dollars, get Invigorator.

Well, there is one way I found to get text to scroll around AE’s 2.5 D. This is not CC Cylinder or CC Sphere. Take a look at this great AE Enhancer’s Discussion project by oscarus,

The aep has 44 solids making a sphere, each solid is 768×576, so I changed them to a size I thought would be more for my text size, 100×100. I changed one, deleted the other large solids, then dupped the 100×100 to fill the sphere again. To the solid layers I applied Effect>Text>Basic Text, I didn’t use the Text Tool because basic text drops the Text right in the middle of the solid, I used one letter per solid, changed the Size to 100. Rotations are done in the Nul 1 layer (Rayon is radius methinks (French??)). Here’s a mov of the result.

The text rotates around another instance of the Comp “Sphere”, this one with the Solids changed to 150×150, this and the text comp (above) put in a new comp and moved around in AE 3D until the text rotates around the sphere. It works.
