    Ok fellow After Effecters, here is the challenge,

    I have a project that I have to do for a high school assembly. It’s an awards ceremony, and they want certain students names recognized at different times, so what they would like is short music videos with names flashing in between some live drama. Each group of students is about 150~200 names. All I need is for the names to flash individual at a time. They can flash up quickly, but it needs to be one to two at a time. I have the lists in Word, and I know that I could cut and past it as one big block of Illustrator text, and then key frame the placement of the text, but that just gives it a scrolling text feel. Any body have a better way to have names flash or pop on screen while music is going in the background? Maybe even have something that would have the names hit on beat. I need some creative juices to flow!
    Help, help!

    Import your names to a normal text layer and pick one of the animation presets or create your own. Should be no problem at all. To facilitate importing the text, find yourself a JSX script. Has been discusssed often enough, sso do a search on this forum.

    OK, this isn’t too bad. An expression to choose the right name, controlled by a slider.

    First, with the Text Tool, put a letter (I used “A”) on the screen where you want the names to appear.

    Add a slider Control, Effect>Expression Controls>Slider Control.

    Then add this expression to the Source Text, twirl down, Alt Click the Source Text Stopwatch, then paste in the expression:

    s = “honesty,integrity,loyalty,compassion,empathy”;
    n = Math.floor(effect(“Slider Control”)(“Slider”));
    s.split(“,”)[n]

    A slider keyframe of “0” gives you honesty, “1” gives you integrity… etc…

    Put your names in place of the “honesty,integrity,loyalty,compassion,empathy” in line one of the expression.

    It can be a little tricky, because all the names must go in line 1, no carriage returns, so to get it to work I used Notepad (a PC product) and all the president names are on line 1, so the expression looks like this;

    s = “George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James Knox Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses Simpson Grant, Rutherford Birchard Hayes, James Abram Garfield, Chester Alan Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Gamaliel Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Clark Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Milhous Nixon, Gerald Rudolph Ford, James Earl Carter, Ronald Wilson Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, George Walker Bush”;
    n = Math.floor(effect(“Slider Control”)(“Slider”));
    s.split(“,”)[n]

    And it works! If I set keyframes for the slider, 1 through 41 gives me the presidents in order.

    You could set the keyframes to the music manually if you wish (drop a keyframe on the beat).

    Note: If your choosing numbers out of order, for example you want to choose “George Washington” again, or 0 on the Slider, but if follows a 3 for “James Madison”, you need to select the keyframes and make them Hold Keyframes, otherwise you’ll flip through the other presidents on you way from 3 to 0 on the slider.

    You might want to break the sets of names into manageable sizes.

    This is from a Dan Ebberts Expression.

    There are some other text epressions below that hold words for 2 seconds with fadein/out and scale up, check it out, it might help too.

    If you’d rather use layer markers to trigger the name changes I can try to hack that out, let me know.

    Ok, No problem this is a three step solution.

    1) Get Powerpoint.
    2) Get a Powerpoint Monkey. (lots of them available from the corporate world)
    3) Have the Monkey do it.

    Here s a script that sounds like it will do what you want. I didn’t work for me, but it might be for AE7 and I’m AE6.5:
