  • Text data from excel to update as video overlay based on Timecode?

Posted by Susan Dempster on August 30, 2013 at 2:33 pm

I have data in an excel sheet that I need to appear as a text overlay on a video. For each second of timecode, I have specific data. In the excel sheet, I have generated each second of timecode in one column with the text that needs to appear at that second in another column.
Is there any relatively automated way of importing and displaying this data? Any plug-ins or 3rd party software that can read from my xls and import to Premiere – or maybe After Effects? I will post in the After Effects forum as well…
Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I would take a look at the After Effects plug in called “Comps from Spreadsheet”

    https://aescripts.com/compsfromspreadsheet/

I think the basis of what you need to automate is there….

but I think you need to talk to the developer….

maybe he can guide you…or will do some custom code for ya….dunno…

but AE and it’s scripting capabilities are likely where this will happen…..that would be my guess…

    Hi Susan,

I’m just wondering if you found a solution to automating your text import?
I’m in the process of developing a solution which would possibly do what you need.
At a high level, it allows you to generate multiple videos from a single template.
    The process would be:
    1) Create the template
    2) Upload the template to the system
    3) Through our web interface, for each team, you simply upload image(s), fill in text/captions/etc, and press [render]. The system then takes care of opening AE, opening the template, replacing the images/texts with the custom items, rendering in AE, encoding again (2 pass) with handbrake, and then making the final video available.

I also supports producing a draft/preview video, SD, and HD, all selectable.

At this stage the system is in beta, so I am looking for users/testers. Let me know if this is of interest to you.
