    I’ve never tried anything like this, but it sounds like something shatter could do. Use a custom map to get the cracks where you want them, and if you keyframe the strength of the blast you can keep it from completely getting blown away. I think that combined with some tweaking of the gravity and other physics settings you could get what your looking for.

    forgot to mention radius would need to be keyframed, or everything will slowly slide down even with a force of 0

    I’d combine shatter with particular as well for the fine dust particles. Use you text layer as the emitter. Key frame the particles per seconds to create short spurts of crumbline and falling apart.

    Good luck with this. It could be a pretty cool effect.
