Text Blur
This is my first time posting on the forums although I have used creative cow over many years as the fountain of knowledge it is.
To set up my question i’ll give some background to my project. I’m working on the title sequence for a documentary on blindness, so I want the titles to suggest this issue in a visual way. So far I have been playing around with simple keyframe animation using blur to bring the text in and out of focus but am not happy with the results. Recently I saw the latest Harry Potter trailer in the cinema and at the end they blend NOVEMBER into https://www.harrypotter.com, the clip can be found here: https://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/harrypotterandthehalfbloodprince/ (select trailer 1 in the ‘choose clip’ panel)This may be a simple effect to achieve but so far I haven’t been able to nail it. What I would like is some advice on how to obtain this morphing blur effect. And also any further suggestions/advice on effects I could utilise in the title sequence to convey the element of blindness

That looks like it might just be a vertical blur with the website fading in as it fades out.
Reminds me of a fairly common trick you could probably use to your advantage:
linear(transform.opacity,0,100,30,0);Add that expression to the blur effect (Alt click on the blur amount stopwatch) and it will link the layers opacity to the blur-amount. (The expression in English breaks down to ‘As Opacity moves from 0 to 100 change this value from 30 to 0.’)
As you’ll see when you play with it, this means you can blur & fade everything in together using only opacity keyframes – change the ’30’ value for different strengths.
As for other advice – experiment with the different blur effects – if you put them next to each other you realize just how different they can be, some do much more ‘obvious’ blurring then others.

I think the Harry Potter thing could be done on a precomp that changes from month to web address. If you watch it frame-by-frame you can see the https://www showing up quite clearly before the blur even starts.
Possibly a couple different copies of the precomp fade up as the blur gets stronger, so it blurs, but stays pretty bright. Also, I think they may have been scaling up vertically too, not just blurring it.There are always several different ways to achieve an effect.
