  • Text Alignment Issue

Posted by Kyle Jenkins on March 1, 2011 at 8:26 pm

I am having an issue working with templates in FCP.

When I create a template in Motion, and then I go to use it in FCP, it only scales the text up from the baseline. I haven’t been able to figure out how to get any sort of vertical alignment (or align on the y-axis) to work.

Is this even possible to do? I want the text to scale both upwards AND downwards, but it only scales UPwards… I have no issue with setting it to center in the alignment tab, but like I said it only takes care of my X-axis…

I have been looking around the forum and haven’t seen anything on this, please excuse me if I missed a thread pertaining to this problem…

Text, like any layer in Motion, scales (and rotates) from its anchor point, which defaults to the baseline of a text layer. Move it to the middle of the layer vertically, and the text will scale from the middle.

I guess I wrote incorrectly when I said I was having scaling issues. I’m actually having issues with the font size not scaling. When I raise the font size it only scales up from the baseline… I see no change when I mess around with the position settings under the text layout tab…

    Layout method is “Type”
    Alignment – Center
    Justification – None
    Anchor Point – Line
    Position – x=0, y=0, z=0

They’re still the same thing and doing what Mark suggested is what you need to do. You have to move the type layer’s anchor point to the middle using the anchor point tool. It’s under the arrow selection tool and looks like a target.

I have the same issue and trying what is suggested on this thread doesn’t seem to work.

If I move the anchor point from the bottom to the middle of my textbox then it has the same effect as if I had just moved the base up. I still don’t get my text scaling downwards, away from the anchor point, when I increase the text size.

    Try adjusting the baseline.

When I move the baseline the text moves up or down accordingly.
In effect I guess I want the baseline to be anchored to the center of the text so that when its size is increased in an FCP template the text ‘grows’ outwards, up and down, from this point, instead of just up.

Have been experimenting with this for ages now and still no joy…

    Found this thread:

Looks like it may be a matter of linking the Y positioning to the font size.

If you move the baseline, the text will scale from the new baseline position – so move the baseline so that the anchor point appear in the horizontal middle of the text, and the text will scale from the horizontal middle. The sequence text behavior works great with this approach when animating scale.

    Hey Mark,

I have the same problem and adjusting the baseline doesn’t effect where the text size scales from, I set the baseline to -100 and the increased the size slider and still the text scales up from the bottom of the text.

I need it to go from the top as I’m making a Motion templet with 2 line of text but don’t wont the gap between the top and bottom line to change when to font sized is changed in FCP. so the top line scael perfectly but need to get the bottom line to scale to point size from the top.

    Cheers
