  • Terrible delay on RAM Previews

Posted by James Woods on August 14, 2008 at 4:03 pm

When I first got my computer (MACPRO 8-core 3.0ghz 16gb RAM) it flew through RAM Previews, I don’t know if I changed something or what but i’m having a 20-50 second delay before the preview even starts!
Any ideas? This is intensely frustrating.

Nope, no audio in this one. Thanks for trying to help.

do you see the problem on all comps now…? how about if you created a very simple animation, like on solid moving across the screen… will it still take 20 seconds to start the preview?

how about if you turn off multiprocessing, do you still see a long lag?

we’re trying to determine if it is a comp problem or a multiprocessing problem or something else…

Try looking at your AE preferences under “Multiprocessing” and see if “Render Multiple Frame Simultaneously” is checked. If it is, when you first do a ram preview it will initialize 8 processes ( for your 8 core machine ) then start rendering your ram preview…sometimes this takes a few seconds ( ~20 seconds maybe ). For instant ram previews turn off this setting.

I have the same system and noticed the exact same thing you’re seeing….although I found the little wait upfront more than made up for the speed increase on longer more complex comps. But your mileage may vary.

As a followup to my previous post – this seems to have been fixed in the 8.0.2 update (PDF LINK)

hi steve, do you see the ram preivew lag on every preview or just the first after launching ae? i have a similar lag, but it is only on the first preview (which is normal), it sounded like james was having this on every preview, and that’s not normal.

the 8.0.2 update note is good, maybe that will help james’ issue… it sounds like that fixed an issue where the ram preview finished rendering but lagged on the playback start. after reading james’ original post, it sounds like that may have been his problem…

Ya I only see the delay on that first preview you do after launching AE….but sometimes for some reason on my system it will have to relaunch the AERender processes for some reason. But i just now updated to 8.0.2 so we’ll see.
