Terrain Maps/fly through
Posted by Tim Maloney on January 23, 2007 at 8:26 pmHello all,
Need to do some set up sequences for a motor sports ( Rallying ) program where the client wants me to fly in from a view of Australia to the state then finally a view of the region where the rally will be held.
Is there some software around for this? Google Earth? TV Weather software??

January 23, 2007 at 8:44 pmGoogle Earth is one option. There is a license fee of $400/year for the production version.
I use a program called Curious World Maps which, BTW, is the TV mapping software you are thinking of. But it is very price restrictive…$10,000 for the base application with DEM (satellite data) for each region costing more. And it can zoom in from space to very tight, and then even do a 3D flyover. It can’t go from the zoom in TO the flyover, but I solve that with a dissolve or flash transition.
If you need to I can recommend someone who can do the maps for you. He is a genius. I would offer, but I am very busy cutting a rough cut at the moment.
e-mail is in my profile.

January 23, 2007 at 10:13 pmBesides the license fee of $400/year for google earth there is also a per use fee of $200.00. That’s per use not per show. That fee is also to be paid for broadcast reruns. Works great for heavy popluation locations. Not so great for the boonies.

January 23, 2007 at 11:02 pmCheck out NASA’s World Wind program. It’s very similar in design to Google Earth and is completely free to use the public domain images. You can zoom, pan, tilt to you find the way you want your image to be, do a PRINT SCR and take a screen shot, put it in FCP and then keyframe movement.
From their FAQ page:
Are images on World Wind copyrighted?
The Landsat Global Mosaic, Blue Marble, and the USGS raster maps and images are all Public Domain.
Can I use images on World Wind for commercial purposes?
Some of the datasets that World Wind has access to are in the ‘Public Domain’ and can be used for commercial purposes (but generally not the actual data servers), however, some datasets, including 3rd-party add-ons/plugins may have their own terms-of-use which could prohibit commercial use of their products and services.

February 10, 2011 at 10:56 pmShane, I know this thread is a hundred years old, but do you have any new ideas about map fly-in’s. I’ve created a few using AE and NASA sat images ( I think video co-pilot has a tut on this), and I’m not sure that I really like all the hoops you have to jump through to use Google Maps (they are not very pretty either). I was looking for an easier solution. Any new thoughts, do you still have a “map” guy you could recommend?
