July 22, 2015 at 6:46 pm“It is my opinion that your IT director should be fired immediately. He is obviously complete unaware of the professional video industry, and completely unaware not only of the Facilis Terrablock, but of the other professional solutions that are available from professional video companies, that make up 99% of every professional television station and professional video facility in the entire world.”
Bob, your assumption is wrong on many levels. When considering a capital purchase a proper decision analysis needs to be performed, and that doesn’t include just saying “we want this product”. If you want to learn more about integrated decision management, check out the courses offered by DSI, they are quite good
https://www.decisionstrategies.com/Training.htmlNext, when the word “Mission critical” is tossed around in every other sentence with respect to up time and delivering on timelines for this environment, Windows 7 is not a platform from which to build a solution, that’s my opinion, and the opinion of a great many sysadmin across the globe. Bob, listen to what I’m saying here, the Facilis Terrablock might do a bang up job most of the time, but I’m not concerned with most of the time, I’m concerned with when it shits the bed. I am privy to information where it reboots itself under high load on a regular basis. Anyone in the storage game understands what can happen to data in a raid 5 when a system goes down ungracefully. There are other threads in this site that refer to the Terrablock as the Terrorblock so I raised questions that hadn’t been answered prior to a Terrablock being put forward as the “solution of choice”. For this you say I should be fired? Nice Bob.
“I am sure that your IT director is not familiar with any of these brands, as I am sure he has never attended an NAB trade show, IBC show, CCW show, SMPTE meeting, etc. This all means that he is completely unqualified to make any decisions on the purchase of a professional shared storage system for your company.”
You don’t know me Bob and neither does Sal. Neither of you know my experience, nor do either of you know the 6 year history of this studio or how it got setup the way it did. You are talking out of your ass and it shows.
“I urge you to show this to your supervisor or boss, and simply say “maybe we should contact a company that is familiar with what we need, because I don’t thing that our IT director is familiar with the requirements that are necessary for our department”.”
I agree, show it to your boss, and then show it to his bosses.
Again Terrablock may work most of the time, but I’m concerned with what happens when its not most of the time. There are plenty of other solutions available for video and post production which can deliver the requirements needed by the editors while still being designed to mitigate a great number of concerns that I put forward to Sal and the others in the studio, some of those systems you you listed. DDP is one such solution recommended by Cinesys, a company that has provided great support for us btw and has quite the footprint in the production support arena, and their input means more than that of someone who assumes the mantel of omniscience on a forum, however, the full DA hasn’t been completed as of yet. We may go a completely different way. I got off the phone a while ago with a different vendor who offers a competing product, which is truly engineered to HA specs that wasn’t DDP and wasn’t a Terrablock.
Here is my point Bob, storage is storage, HA is HA, and specs are specs. Video/Post has a some specific needs that Corporate America doesn’t need, but you know what, those requirements aren’t beyond the comprehension of Technology Professionals. Some of the same needs that a mission critical database have DO translate over to designing a system for video editors that has similar mission critical status. Its not some secret sauce that is resigned to the province of the “editing elite” so get over yourself.
“Now if you are talking about Ardis Technolgies Dynamic Drive Pool, they are in the Netherlands. Are you in the Netherlands ? Who is going to support your product ?”
This was the funniest thing I’ve read today Bob.
To the extent you can put aside your opinion and offer fact based information that can contribute to the discussion, then great, I welcome it. Otherwise quit making assumptions about things you know nothing about.
-Some stupid IT manager that apparently knows nothing.
