hi there. i’ve got a terminology question for the kind creativecow crew.

if i have a shot of a building and i replace the roof + sky + add flags to make the building look like a castle- can this be classified as matte painting?

and if i create a huge bg plate for my green screen and create a camera move for the shot — what should i call this – BG Creation?

i’m putting together my reel and as i’ve done quite a bit of compositing am doing a few shot breakdowns, and want to get the terms spot on.

    any help appreciated!

Sure matte painting, Sky replacement, Set extentions, If you use 3d space, you “3d composited” these elements.
Show before and afters, and this plate plus this plus this and show final.

don’t get detailed with every liitle thing, it may seem like your stretching for acknoledment when you should let your work speak for itself.

cheers for the input andrew, set extensions, that’s a good one…

yeah i’ve been checking out quite a few compositors reels and have optioned for a dvd option of ‘shot breakdown’ and freezing a couple of key shots, dissolving the layers on (only a few of them, the main ones) and then continuing playing the shot. some people have followed this up with text under describing what they’ve done, but i think this is overdo-ing it.

    see how she goes… 🙂

Although it is a good idea to quickly breakdown shots in elements, to show the complexity of your work (and to show how much of it was handwork… especially on photoreal effects people tend to wonder what was done digitally anyway), you need to keep up the pacing and NOT make it a tutorial.

You’re not trying to teach anyone, but show your qualities.
