Is there a way to turn temporarily turn off an effect in Adobe Illustrator CS2?

I have a 3D effect on some text. However, I would like to be able to edit the text and change it’s color, without having to wait for the memory-intensive 3D effect to render every time I do this.

I could not find anything in the Appearance palette. Is it possible to just disable this effect, and then turn it back on once I’ve settled on the color/words?

    Thanks,
    Naveen

Would be great if appearance had visibility icons and the ability to change stroke weight there.

There is no way to temporarily turn off the effect. The only adice I can offer is to in the 3D Effect turn off shading(everything shuodl go much faster), then turn it back on when done.
