I am trying to use thinking particles to create an effect like

I can duplicate the look with primitive objects, but when I apply it to text, the center exstruded part of the text looks good, but the caps come in as big chunks no matter what I do to it. Any ideas. Thank you. -

Try using the regular grid option on the caps, with a small enough number to give you a lot of faces.
