Taping over and capture on DV tapes
Hey there. I’m using very cheap home video cameras to shoot videos for my church. To save on cost, i use DV tapes over and over again. Any reason why after using a DV tape one time, I can’t capture what i’ve recorded? I can capture any of the original footage on the tape, but the taped over footage is a black screen on Premiere Pro CS3 and the sound is garbled. The picture and sound are perfectly fine on the camera. why won’t that translate to the computer? Using a Mac OS X Leapord with 4 GB Ram and a 3.07 Ghz processor, by the way.

Have you tested capturing with other software?

I’ve reused DV tapes for over 10 years without issues, so that’s not likely to be the problem. If you have a bad recording, could be something going wrong with the camera alignment, dirty head, etc.

I’ve tried to record it in iMovie, and even on my old windows desktop with Premiere Pro 2.0. I’ve tried three different cameras, and used head cleaners on the cameras to make sure everything is fine. The tape will play on the video camera without any trouble. Picture is good and sound is good there, but then it won’t transfer to the computer.

Well that is truly strange. Do you have a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable? Try dubbing tape from one camera to another to make a digital duplicate and see if the new copy can be captured, new timecode is written when you do this
