    Pat,

This is one of my major gripes with the HVX; it takes the same size tape as the SDX, namely the “medium” size whereas the Varicam takes the “large” size. Everyone must beware that on shoots where these two cameras will be comingled that two different sized tapes will be required.

A bit of a hassle when both cameras are used for sure. So, the answer to my question is yes, a standard DVCPRO66 tape can be used in the HVX900? As opposed to a particular tape stock for HD.

    Pat,

Read the specific spec online at the Panasonic website.

Download the HDX-900 brochure where you find the info.

So only questions that aren’t addressed in manufacturer literature and websites can be answered here Tony?

I am using only the red cap tape product with success in the Varicam and then in the 1200A. Using the yellow cap tape (Fuji) and then inserting a red cap tape (also Fuji) into the 1200a makes the head clog. Anyone else having this issue in post? So I’m hunting down a supply of red cap M cassettes for the HDX900 I have on order.

    Richard,

Red and Yellow only refers to the color of the plastic case; the tape inside is the same!

That’s what I believe, but practice has proven differently-at least in my 1200a Deck

I’m willing to place a small wager that the different tapes have nothing whatsoever to do with your machine problem.

It’s not unusual to make erroneous diagnoses when one thing, by sheer chance alone, seems to produce a given result.

Unless something has changed, the manufacturer of the tapes says that they are absolutely identical except for the case color and text. If this is no longer the case, it’s important news for all of us.

I suggest you have the problem checked out before it causes more trouble, probably when you need the machine most!

Also, unless you are getting some marketing/markup benefit from using the more expensive tapes, you are not doing yourself a favor using them.

Hope you get it sorted out!

    Good shooting!

Can we use “yellow cap” FUJI 66 DVCPRO tapes in the HVX900 camera?

Switched to the yellow cap Panasonic product, and no problem. Alex at Panasonic service suggests (of course) that I be using Panasonic tapes. If that’s what it takes, then so be it. And now, FYI, Panasonic charges the same price for Red cap as Yellow cap. Fuji still gets a premium for the red cap, for now.

Still waiting for the 900 camera. But I have tape.
