Hey, I was wondering if there is a function in Vegas Pro to capture straight to the hard drive?

Can I set the software to capture and just have my camera set to “camera” mode?

I am a FCP editor at my fulltime job, but I just built a beast of a PC at home and am looking at software options… shooting directly to a computer drive is something I want to try out…. if Sony Vegas isn’t capable of this are there any other good options besides Canon Console and Adobe On Location?

    Thanks,
    Derek

Yes. Just connect your camera (firewire preferred) to the computer. Select the camera in Vegas and capture away. I just ran a trial with my little usb screen cam and it even worked with it. (Vegas 6)

    Ok cool, Thanks!

I will be testing it this weekend using a trial of sony vegas pro 8.

Have you ever used it in crucial situations where you very much depended on it working and functioning properly to capture video of something all day long?

we are going to be taping a sports event (single cam coverage)- but this time while we test it out, we are going to have our normal camera guy shooting to tape, and another camera guy shooting to disk…. it is like a 14 hour event…. so we need to make sure it works all day long. The event is broken up into about 12 1-1.5hr separate events, so we will have several hard drives to swap out to our editing/sales area…..

    Thanks,
    Derek

Derek, I’ve done up to 4 hr. captures direct to external hard drive (I’ve used both both USB & firewire models) with no problems.
Having said that, I’m old-fashioned enough to still record a tape of the event.
Having a recorder and the blank tapes that allow me to tape up to 276 min. non-stop is a real bonus 🙂
