tapeless media management
Hi all,
I have a basic question about labeling tapeless media. This has been addressed before but I’d like to clarify completely because I’m quite paranoid that I will get myself into an organizational snarl of improperly labeled reels.
I’m working with a few days worth of documentary footage shot on the Canon 5D and have transcoded all the H.264 files in Final Cut no problem. However, I simply labeled the reels 001, 002, etc and now realize that it would probably be good to include the date in the reel name. I’m happy to follow Shane Ross’s suggestion of labeling the reels PROJECTNAME_DATE_CARDNUMBER but am unclear as to whether that means that each shoot date will start over again with Card 1. For example, would footage shot on the first card used on October 10th be labeled PROJECTNAME101010_001 and footage shot on the first card used on October 11th be labeled PROJECTNAME101110_001? Is there any benefit to this over labeling the reels PROJECTNAME001_101010, PROJECTNAME002_101010, PROJECTNAME003_101110, etc? Part of what has prompted this question is Shane’s browser organization system of labeling folders “ProjectNameReel# Date,” which I use. Maybe it’s over-thinking things but if my reels are labeled as such in the Browser and do not start over again at 001 at the beginning of each shoot date, I’d like them to be labeled identically in the Reel column and on my back-up drives.
Any advice very much appreciated and Shane, if you read this, I apologize for managing to be confused despite your awesome tutorial and multiple posts on this subject, forgive me!
Thanks,
Tory
