  • tape problem prevents capture & transfers to copy?

I received a tape from a client – home movie type stuff recorded with a sony DV handycam – don’t know the model. Before capturing the tape I duplicated it and captured the copy. FCP would not capture because of an error, first it reported time code break – then an error for which I could not get details. I narrowed the problem down to a specific point on the tape. Could not capture that section. I made another copy – same problem in the same place. I went back to the original tape – again same problem in the same place.

what type of problem might a tape have that would prevent capture even when copied? The original tape seems to hand momentarily at the critical point – but there is no timecode break there?

It’s probably an ordinary video glitch caused by a dirty record head (on the camera). DV timecode could interpolated from adjacent frames so that would explain no TC break. Just like in the old linear days, if the control track is broken, you will have a problem. Since you are doing a digital “clone” of the original tape, you are also copying the glitch. It’s not a dirty playback head if the glitch shows in the same spot everytime.

    Solutions:
-Copy analog – repair the bad frame in edit.
-digitize around the glitch (if that exact take is not needed)

as it was the piece was lost was only a couple of seconds and was non-critical. But is there a way to overcome this problem?
