Taking Avid Xpress Pro projects and working them in After Effects 7…?
Hi there:
I’ve got a PC and am thinking about using Avid when I start editing DVCPRO HD.
I took some classes a few years ago… I think when Xpress was new. At that time you needed Automatic Duck to bring Avid files into After Effects. Everything I do goes through After Effects.
Is this still the case or is there a newer workflow (nothing against Automatic Duck)?

If you want to bring your whole timeline into AE, then you will need Automatic Duck. If you only want to work on a small sequence or shot, you can simply export a QT Ref of that mini sequence or shot by creating in and out points and then exporting from the file menu. When you import the QT Ref file into AE, if your source is interlaced you will have to interpret the footage to be lower or upper field first. After that, you can work with the shot/sequence and then Export out of AE as an Avid Compliant OMF file that requires no more extra rendering upon returning to the Avid Editing application.

Going a bit further, you could bring in tthe whole piece as a QT Ref file and then split it up in AE if you don’t want to go with Automatic Duck. I’ll do this for mainly for finishing. The end result is pretty much the same.
