Take out part of clip, leave audio, add black slug
If I have some video clips on a timeline, How can I remove the middle of 1 clip, (just the video, not the audio) that leaves an empty space, add a Black Slug where that clip used to be, but not disturb any of the audio? I don’t want the audio be be removed when I take out just the Video clip.

The proper method in FCPX would be to add a black solid above the clip.
If you must put it on the same line as your clip, you’re going to end up with either 2 or 3 video clips consisting of L cuts and or disconnected audio.

Bret’s idea is best in case you need to bring back the video at some point, but to do exactly what you’re asking…
Select clip and hit CTL+SHIFT+S to disconnect the audio from the video. Or you can right-click the clip and do the same. Then with the video clip selected, hit SHIFT+DEL. This deletes the video clip and leaves a gap in it’s place.

Because the presumption was that the clips were already edited into the timeline. If you know you’re only using the audio from a video clip, sure it makes sense to turn off the video targeting, but if you decide later that you don’t want the video, then this doesn’t help much. Unless you use it with match frame and replace.
