Someone tell me why this seems fundamentally wrong. I record everything in HDV on a Canon XH-A1. Next step is while editing to take my pan/crop window down to 720×480, or any size between that and 1440×1080 maintaining aspect, and do on the spot pans as I want and not as the camera intended. If basic math says you can cut it down and maintain the same resolution, whats the catch. I had a camera guy way, way wide on the bride walking down and need to trim the shot. Everything was recorded hi-def but final output is standard MPG2 DVD. Help???

There is no “catch”. What you are proposing would work fine. Just start an SD project, add the HD to the timeline, and pan and zoom as desired.
