Thanks for the suggestions, Steve. I’ll have to check into how well Windows 7 is playing with SAWStudio(my DAW of choice for audio work), and my RME HDSP system. The system is very efficient and stable for SS right now, but if all indicators for Windows 7 look good, I may go for it.

You could go for solid state disk drives. That will give you one heck of a performance boost.

A recently released high end ATI or NVidia video card with 400+ CUDA cores can improve rendering times with certain video file formats.

Ditto to the Solid State Drive suggestion. It makes programs load crazy fast.

And if you audio software can run on Windows 7 64bit that will be a big plus.

If there is a downside to SSDs, that would be cost per GB. In my system I only use SSDs for system and programs. A 4 x 1TB raid, striped 0, for video storage is much more cost effective and is still faster than the SSDs.

warning. RAID 0 offers no redundancy so offload projects as they are completed because when you lose a single drive you lose everything.

I agree with the others, the ultimate XP tweak is called “Windows 7 64-bit” 😉

But I understand that you have a stable audio recording environment so it’s a big leap.
