fcp seems different than my other systems in this regard so i
wanted to ask about it here. also, the googling i’ve done has
    not provided a clear answer.

usually i set my systems up with system, media, and render
drives. the os, apps, and possibly projects reside on the
system drive. captured media goes on the media drive. i usually
pretty much fill this drive up since the files won’t be touched
again once captured. then i have a separate drive for rendering
and other files that might be more transitory; things like stills
    or titles maybe.

fcp seems to want my render and media files on the same drive or
partition. is this something i can redefine? or must they always
    reside together?

    thanks,
    BabaG

Considering your render files are also media files, it is best to keep them all on the same drive.

Tip for the day. You may use a render file as a video clip in your timeline.

thanks steve. i’d thought of the render file onto the timeline idea
and have used it many times on other systems. good tip.

my thinking is that the difference between captured and rendered files
is not in the type of file but how it is used. since captured media will
not be altered once written to the drive, i like to keep it all isolated.
files are laid down sequentially that way on the drive. fragmentation
should never occur. new captures just pick up where the last left off.

render files can be generated and regenerated over and over as projects
evolve. i’d think the system might gain some performance by having these
separate where they can be defragged, if need be, or simply regenerated.

since one type is static and the other dynamic it seems to me a good idea
    to segregate them.

    Baba,

FCP is totally freeform in that you can send Audio & Video Capture and Audio & Video Renders to 4 separate drives if you like. These can be separate locations from your project files and from your Autosave location. You decide. You can also manually create folders for stills, music, graphics, sfx, etc. if you wish. The key is being organized and consistent in your approach, since these changes are across all projects and all users. If your media goes to an external removeable drive and you change drives, then you also have to change your system settings.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

What you are looking for is under System Settings.

Go to Final Cut Pro —> System Settings. The first tab is for setting your capture scratch. First you have to add the disks you want to use, then for each disk check the thing you want recorded on it.

For the most speed and performance, you’re better off keeping all the media together. The more your media is spread out, the more likely you are to experience dropped frames. I simply assign one drive or array for all my media, including render files.
