Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy System Question

  • System Question

Posted by Derek Natzke on July 7, 2009 at 7:31 pm

We are looking at getting a new system for the studio and keep hitting walls. The main question that keeps rising up is what displays to get, (1) 30″ or (2) 24″ LEDs or (2) 30′. We are looking to get a Sonnet storage device so that alone takes up one PCI slot, then the AJA Kona LHe (one more slot) and the remaining slots will be for displays. How many cards does it take to run a 30″ display? How many cards does it take to run a 24″ LED display? What would be the best move/bang for the buck? I’m not partial to Apple displays, that is what we were quoted.

    Thank you,

    Derek

Current graphic cards in Mac Pros can run (3) 30″ or smaller monitors. They have (1) DVI and (1) Mini Display Port, they are active at the same time.

For the second monitor you need to buy and adapter to go from the cards Mini Display port to DVI, the 30″ adapter is $100, 24″ are $30 (i think).

Two 30″ monitors would be huge, I would need to send out a search party to find my curser.

You cannot use (2) of the new Mac 24″ LED because there is no adapter (yet) to go from the monitors Mini Display connector to DVI on the Card.

How can they run (3) if there are only two ports? Could I run two 24″ displays if I got each display their own card?

Our facility uses Apple 24s and 20s in 5 of the suites, the other suite has a Dell Ultra Sharp combo, In the studio we have a single Dell 24, not much editing goes on there. Personally I own a pair of Dells and am very pleased with either. I have also worked with a single 30 Apple display and it was odd having everything on one huge display since I am used to having 2 programs open at once, Expose and Spaces fix this problem, but I do like to work with a dual display system.

What card are you using? Are you using two displays that are the same size? I need to stay a single slot graphics card and the GeForce GT 120 seems to be the best fit but I have no idea as to what the best pair of displays are.

The new Mac Pros have a double wide slot for it’s graphic card so you’re not saving any space with the GT 120. Upgrade to the ATI Radeon card it blows the GT 120 out of the water. Apple also offers a higher end Nvidia EVGA GeForce GTX 285 but you have to purchase it from the apple store separately. According to barefeats it tops them all.

The GT120 can support up to (2) 30″ (not three like my typo in first post). (2) 24″ or one 30″ are a really nice fits but this a personal taste and likes, not a right or wrong answer. I like one big monitor over (2) 24s but that is because the split screen distracts me, but most people like the 2 over 1.

The only thing that will not work on one card is (2) of the new 24″ LED apple displays and that is solely because of the cabling. They are really nice monitors bright but they are high gloss glass which a lot of people don’t like. You can get 2 Dell 24″ for just over the cost of one apple 24″

You can also run mismatched monitors with no problem. such as the new 24″ and 30″ monitors at the same time. Once again no right and wrong, just what works for you.

    HI Derek,
i have to say the massive price of the apple screens makes it a no brainer. Get 2 dells and use the spare cash for a fridge! The picture quality is still great, although to be honest the only picture quality that matters is on the external monitor driven by your Kona card.
    best
