System frequency setting?
Hi there
I work in a Post Production House and find Varicam a bit confusing.
I got given some HD-DVC Pro tapes to digitize for one of the offline edit. I think they are shot 720p 25fps. (I got this info from the deck by pressing counter as there was no information on the tapes.
I am using Panasonic AJ-1200 for playback. These tapes only play at System frequency setting 25 00 04 which is according to the manual 25hz SD out.
When I select System Frequency 25 00 01 which is 50i 25p, my tapes wont play. Does this mean these tapes have been recorded with a SD. Or is there a setting that I am not aware of.

All Varicam is 720p. I can’t relly help with the setting on the deck, but what I can suggest is that you contact either the field producer and/or the dp who were involved in the shoot.
I am a DP and have always realized that those involved with editing are really important to the succes of what I shot.
Especially with HD I am ANNAL about making sure the tapes are marked with the vital information, like frame rate, so that the persons editing with them know what they are dealing with.
Some field producers I’ve worked with are annal like myself and others are very unaware of the language much less the technology involved and the critical need for understanding the workflow. I was recentley told to make sure my HD camera was set up for 16X9. I said OK and asked if they wanted color.
Also, make a DP happy, if you are working with good material in the edit suite, most DP’s would love to hear about it…give them a call or drop an e-mail. I enjoy making the producer and client happy, but when I hesar I made the editor happy it makes my MONTH!Cheers
