Prior to loading Studio2 (a formidable accommodation), I thought it would be a good time to install a new system drive. The current drive is the original 160gig Maxtor. Has anyone an opinion, recommendation, experience or advice regarding a reliable replacement? Thank you.

250 GB SATA drives are under $100 these days and are perfect for a boot drive. I’d keep the 160 as a second storage drive for Final Cut Studio applications content.

Personally, I don’t like Maxtor drives but any other Seagate, Hitachi or Western Digital drive is acceptable.

If it were me, I’d be looking at the Segate ES series SATA’s… they are enterprise class drives, and don’t cost much more than the others… they are extremely fast and a very sweet spot in pricing for this class of drive.

This one is 750gigs, but they come in smaller capacities if you want to spend less…

Stick with a 250 or 300 GB drive. It’s best to keep the boot drive (somewhat) small. Your media and other large files can be on other drives.

By keeping the boot drive smaller it’s faster for the OS to keep track of and access different parts of the programs its running.

Is this just as good with less fat:

    Seagate Barracuda ES ST3400620NS 400GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache

    Thanks,

Jeff, I’ve never heard anyone say this before… do you have some sort of evidence or empirical data posted on the Internet that backs this up? I’ve just never heard of such a thing.

Is this drive good for the MacPro as well, or do I need something different?

    Thanks,

    Steve
