  System audio drops when Avid runs

  When I run my Media Composer on my Windows XP SP3 system, my audio levels plummet to a faint whisper until the program is closed. This includes all clips, tones, etc. in Avid as well as audio coming from other programs like iTunes, WMP, and even web browsers. I don’t have an independent sound card, and the onboard audio for my mobo is labeled as “Realtek HD Audio”.

  Any ideas?
