Synology / Qnap and similar
Hi all, thanks to all for the great resource the cow is. Have been lurking for a while ……months of great reading!
Anyway, I’ve started working for a new/ small production company with in house post facilities here in Australia. They have started small but are growing quickly. Until now they have made do with two edit suites and editited off external USB3 drives but they are in the process of installing a third suite and I have suggested they look at some shared storage . They run Adobe Premiere on PC and predominantly edit DSLR footage (all short form) without transcoding but very occasionally do the odd job on Red or Alexa.
I know that ultimately it is suggested here to night the bullet and go for a SmallTree or similar system but the budget doesn’t really stretch that far just yet.
I have been looking at the Synology NAS solutions, mainly the DS2015XS with built in 10Gbe ports or the 3615xs with a Synology 10Gbe card.
I’d like to run 10Gbe from the NAS to a NETGEAR GSM7228S switch and then 1Gbe out to each suite as well as to two office imacs that producers sometimes use logging or laying down a basic premiere timeline. I figure this option would also give us the scope to add 10Gbe cards to the suites in future for faster connections when needed. Another option is to install an Intel i350T2 dual port Gigabit card into each ofbthe three suites to provide 2Gbe connections via link aggregation.
So, I know from reading the old posts on this forum that it is recommended to go for a solution like small tree but this is out of our budget.
My question is, have the Synology Systems gotten better for video editing and if not, why aren’t they recomended?
What does Small Tree do that Synology cant?
My background is predominantly in live tv as an EVS / editor so not an IT specialist at all. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
