  • Syncing recaptured footage with Vegas project

Posted by Matt Surf on March 20, 2011 at 8:27 pm

I posted a week or so back but am still a bit stuck, despite some great help.

My dilemma is that the captured files for my Vegas project have been lost on a broken external HDD. I still have the original source footage on Mini DV and also the original Vegas file of the whole project.

The problem is, I can re-capture the footage off the tapes but how then do I get that footage to sync with the shots, edits etc I’ve already made in the Vegas file project, especially when I already have clips with names in the Vegas project that I can’t re-capture as the same name?? (hope that makes sense)

Any help greatly appreciated as there’s a six month wait on getting my files back off the HDD and I have a client waiting for a finished project!

(Rest assured I’ve learnt the lesson about multiple back ups!!) :0)

Thanks in advance for any possible help on this.

Did you save the .sfvidcap file when you captured? If you did, you can open that .sfvidcap file and recapture the tapes. You should always save the capture session with your project files. If not, right-click on one of the missing media files in the Project Media and select Recapture…. This will load the video capture utility and attempt to recapture the footage.

Thanks for your assistance John – I’m not sure if I saved that file (or worse, whether it’s on the damaged hard drive) but I’ll have a look.

Does this mean that Vegas will automatically search for and match the missing clip with the relevant content on the tape?

Vegas will use the timecode on the tape to recapture the clips. If the tape has broken timecode, you may get unpredictable results. Also this only works with with DV footage which I assume you are using since you mentioned they were miniDV tapes.

Thanks John – fingers crossed! If the timecode isn’t on the tapes or if anything else untoward happens is that my only option?
    Again, many thanks.

That… and start over from scratch are your two options.
