  • Syncing audio playback for musical

To begin with I will give a little rundown of the project and what I am working with. It is a studio musical which was shot on 35mm, transfered to HD and then dubbed to DVCAM for editing. We are finishing on HD so I will be exporting my EDL for a tape to tape on-line. I am editing with FCP 4.5 HD on a 1.67GHZ G4 Power Book with 2GB of RAM running 10.3.9.

Since it is a musical with song and dance numbers we had playback from a Protools setup and the actors lip synced. We had a tail slate with rolling numbers at the end of each take for playback sync.

The problem is the sound guys sent in the playback files as a protools session and during the telecine they could not be accessed and the sound was not synced. Is it possible to do this in FCP? I have the rolling numbers on the slate and I am wondering what format the audio needs to be in and how to find and match the time code? Perhaps someone who has experience doing something similar with music videos might be able to help me out?

    Thanks

    Galen

Was the code on the slate derived from Pro Tools? If so, your Pro Tools person can export a wav or aiff file you can use. Just be sure of the starting timecode of the audio timeline. Then, after you import the audio into FCP, position it on your timeline so it starts at its start time. The only other thing to consider is whether the audio timeline was drop or non-drop. Make sure your FCP sequence is the same. Then, your slated #s should line up with your timeline’s #s and also the audio #s.

If the slate timecode is not locked to PTs then you probably have to sync this manually. That isn’t a fun job.
