  • Syncing audio and video in FCP

Posted by Jamie Shuali on February 5, 2010 at 2:24 pm

    Hello,

I am fairly new to Final Cut Pro. Over the weekend, I recorded some video and audio separately and am now attempting to piece them together. I can get the two in sync for about a minute and after that they no longer line up. I was told the root of the problem was that the sound was recorded at 32 bits and needs to be 16 bits to sync up with the video in FCP, however, after I rendered the sound clip and checked up on its settings, I discovered that it was 16 bits. So now I am completely stumped. Any ideas?

    Thank you.

    How did you record it?
Which capture card did you use?

    Jamie,

If your audio was recorded at 32 you should either export it at 48 or set up your sequence in FCP at 32.

What device did you use to capture audio? I don’t know of ANY portable device, besides maybe a laptop, that records at that bit depth. Are you sure it’s not 32k sampling rate?

I recorded the sound on a software program called Cool Edit and the video on a Kodak Zi6. I dumped all of the footage onto my laptop via external drive and imported it straight to FCP. In this case, I am not aware of using a third party capture card.

I did use a laptop and a software program called cool edit. My mistake, It was recorded at 32K and when I brought it into FCP, it converted it to 48K.

Thanks for your reply. FCP converted it to 48, and yet, it is still out of sync.

Digital Heaven has a program called Loader that will automatically convert audio to 48k from a number of common sources. It also has other features that can be very helpful. Here’s an article (for the Cow) by Brendan Coots about Loader.
