    Hi,
I went to a panel on the Bohemian Rhapsody sound department. They mentioned a few times “synchs” and “stems”.

    What are synchs and stems?
I looked up stems but I’m still not clear what they are or why you would use them.

I’ve not found a source that mentions synchs, particularly in that usage in film work. Can anyone expand on what they are and how they fit in to the movie workflow?
    thanks
    mark

By “sync” they are probably referring to sound clips that are synchronized to the video/film. If the scene is an actual live performance, then the “sync” track will be what was actually recorded while shooting the picture. Or if the scene was lip-synced to an original recording, then the “sync” track was the audio track they were performing to, but it is referenced to the picture (by the clap-stick or the timecode or whatever method they used).

A “stem” is a group of mixed down tracks that typically logically fit together. Like a sound effects stem or a Foley stem or a music stem or a dialog stem, etc.

I have a bit of clarity on stems. It stands for STEreo MasterS, from Cado Belle “the purpose of which is to supply premixed music beds with fx to music editors or dubbing mixers when putting music to film”.

However I’ve found confusion, particularly on Audition. There is confusion between stems and tracks, sometimes the words are used interchangeably. When Audition is sending stems back to Premiere it calls them a “track” (even though it contains multiple stems).
