Synchronizing Video to Music
Posted by Ut1l1ty on October 30, 2006 at 12:40 amThis year for my film class I want to do a short that has images/video/text synchronized to music. I am planning to do a lot of the work in After Effects. However I have no idea where to start. Any ideas on the synchronization would be very helpful.

October 30, 2006 at 3:30 pmThat pretty much depends on what you mean by “synchronized to music”. Is it a smooth, slick edit? Rhythmic fades/ transitions? Rhythmical blinking of any kind? Do you want to sync to the “mood” or to certain beats? Without knowing what footage and what sounds/ music, this could easily turn into an endless thread, so if you can provide some more info, it would be easier to provide some guidance.

October 30, 2006 at 5:15 pmHere are two tuts from Adobe, the first one is step by step with AE’s “Convert Audio To Keyframes”:
Using Music to Animate Text

Let Sound Drive the Motion

The same principal is used with Trapcode

October 30, 2006 at 9:35 pmSorry for being a little vague. Here are some more details. The music track is going to be an trance/techno song and I do want video/images syncing with the beats. The way I think about it is how an equalizer will react to the music. Another example would be a text layer scaling up and down as the volume of the song gets louder and softer.

And you might want to check out the AE Plugins Render> Audio Spectrum or Audio Waveform, they take their movement from an audio layer and will also climb onto a mask that’s on the layer (choice of mask under “Path”), apply these effects to solid layers or image layers.

October 31, 2006 at 1:31 amI have used the waveform plugin before, I did NOT know that you could apply it as a mask though. I’ll definitely try and do that equalizer as well. Thanks for the links.
