Hi folks

I’m having some trouble trying to do a split-screen montage of a live show I recorded. The show was recorded on two different low-budget cameras from different angles. The issue I’m having is that the playback seems mysteriously to be running at a different speed on each clip.

It’s not really perceptible to the eye, but when I line things up at the start of the performance (which is about 20 mins long), it’s out of sync again by the end, so they have to be playing at different speeds since they’re both recordings of the same events.

I’m sure this will be something to do with sample rates etc, but I’m not sure what to do about it.

At the moment my best guess is to try ‘change duration’ on one of the clips…. any thoughts at all?

Sounds like mismatched framerates to me, can you check?

Easiest way is to open the source video file in quicktime, hit command-i to bring up the inspector, and see what it says there.

Hi Loren

Sorry for the delay in responding here. You’re bang on, one of them is 25 fps, and the other, oddly, is 24.02.

There’s supposed to be a rate conform section of the video inspector according to the manual, but it isn’t there on my screen. In the end I’ve had to just do minute time-stretching job which is working pretty well, but I don’t suppose you know how to magic up the frame conform thing when it’s missing?:)

I’ve never seen 24.02 frame rate, maybe it’s a PAL thing?

If you have FCP7 or 6, you might be able to run it through cinema tools to convert it to 25fps. I’m also pretty sure After Effects does it easily.

I’ve mixed 23.98 and 29.97 by converting 23.98 to 29.97 using cinema tools if I remember correctly, so surely it’s not hard to conform the 2.

If you’re already done, probably not worth the trouble, but if it comes up again I would thing conforming would be easier than doing manual retiming.

I’m not sure about the rate conform in FCPX, I’ll have to look into that.

Yeah I think I’ll cut my losses on this one:). The 24.02 fps one came from a new camera, so I’ll have a look into switching the settings to something more standard so this doesn’t keep coming up.
