  • Synching masked tracked to Video track

    Hello everyone,

Let me explain what project I am working on, and I’m using Vegas 5 pro:

I work for an engineering company that manufactures machines that measure various parts using video and lasers. Place the part on the stage, and the stage and optics move around measuring the part.

So, to show a laser scanning down inside the part, we first took the part, basically a cylinder and scanned inside. Then, we took the same part, and cut a section out so you could inside the part. I took a still of that.

On track 1, I masked the solid part. Track 2 is the cutout part. Track 1 fades a bit (adjusted the opacity) so it looks like you are seeing through the part.

The problem I’m having, is getting the masked still image to follow the part. The masked part keeps “floating” or “drifting” around. It doesn’t synch up with the moving part. Of course, the moving part is not moving Left to right. It is moving more a diagonal.

Sorry I can’t show the video because it is a proprietary part.

Hopefully I explained enough so someone may be able to help me out!

    Thank you!

It sounds to me like you need to use keyframes to have your masked image follow the moving part.

Hey, it looks as though you are trying to do something similar to me. Check John’s reply to my query on the thread immediately below this. It works a treat!

If you are keyframing, make sure you set the smoothness of each keyframe to zero! Back in Vegas 5 the default was 100.0 and later Sony changed the default to 0.0. If smoothness is anything but zero it will apply a smoothing curve that will cause the movement to ease in and out of the keyframe causing misalignment. You only want smoothness on when simulating camera moves, otherwise keep it off (0.0).

I did the smoothness thing, but there is still some drifting and or moving faster/slower than the video part. Maybe I should upgrade to 8?

Be sure that keyframes are in identical places.
Make certain that keyframes are all of same type ie; smooth, fast, linear, etc.
Be sure event lengths are identical.
Upgrading to 8 won’t change this, if you’ve got timing errors, it’s related to keyframing, most likely.
It’s also possible you’ve got keyframes on a half-frame, but I’d doubt this is the case.

Thank you! It appears I didn’t have the keyframes in the exact spots, which is why there was some minor bumping.
