Synch problem with playback in FCP
I just upgraded to final cut six and now two of the clips in my project (sd miniDV, captured via firewire) suddenly display with video out of synch with audio in FCP. The clips were fine for a long time, but now the video plays about 20 frames before the audio. (We see the slate and THEN we hear the slate.)
When I look at the media files for those clips in quicktime they play fine. I’ve tried copying the quicktimes and re-importing them, to no avail. (I suppose I could export from quicktime, but I don’t know how to avoid loss of quality.)
Since the problem only seems to be with watching the clips in final cut (either from the viewer or the canvass) i decided to experiment by editing them into the timeline and then exporting them. The quicktime I imported sounds the same as the clip in the timeline, but has different video–the correct video to match that audio (from this I conclude the problem is FCP plays the video early, not the audio late.) (Also this means simply resynching the clips in FCP is not an option.)
So the files seem fine and they export fine, it’s just very difficult to work with them in fcp.
I found some mention of similar problems caused by pulldown options during capture (and final cut loves to complain about clips with timecode gaps) I just don’t know why my clips have been fine for so long–and I’m not sure I know where my tapes are to recapture!!
Any advice welcome,
Emily
