sync problem
Hoping someone can help with this because I’ve exhausted all possibilities I know.
Years ago I made a 16mm film that i never finished editing, which at the time was being edited on a steenbeck. I decided to finally finish the film and transfered the 16mm to DVcam. The audio which was originally recorded on a reel to reel nagra was also transfered to dvcam.
I captured audio and video separately. Each captured as one long file because it was a short film and I felt it made capturing easier than doing separate captures.
I am using FCP 4.5 in and captured both audio and video as NTSC DV 4:3
I then imported both files and set about trying to sync picture with audio. I used a clapper sticks when I shot and I thought the process would be easy but it seems when i sync up the clapper sound to picture, the audio is fine for a couple of seconds then it slowly goes out of sync.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I have done wrong?

You need to do a pull down on the audio of .1% This is a normal process beacause of the difference between film speed and video speed. If the tape machine you used to playback the audio from doesn’t have the capability of doing it, you could try selecting an audio clip in FCP and selecting.modify>speed change, then setting the number to 99.9% and see if that get’s you back in sync with the matching video track.

Frank I do not know how to thank you. You have fixed the problem although the one difference was I modified the audio to 101%. I noticed that the audio seemed to lag when a character sniffled at 99.9 so I went the other direction and that seemed to solve the problem.
Do you know where i can read about this 1% issue anywhere? Or about film transfer to video issues. If not can you tell me anymore details about this especially when you say it is a normal process as i had the audio transfered at a reputable sound place and no one mentioned this issue.Again thanks so much for sending me in the right direction.

The sound house probably just transferred the audio as you asked. If you had it transferred to the same tape as the video then they would have had to do a pulldown. Just for future reference the speed difference is 0.1% not 1%. To get into the technical reasons for this would be way too much for this forum. Thanks again Frank for your time and knowledge. I am somewhat confused by the fact that 99.9 and 100.1 did not work as well for me as 101%. Maybe I’m not seeing it but it looks in sync to me at 101. Even though its working I still want to know why this is.
