  • Sync New Multiclip Angle

Posted by Dustin Parsons on March 21, 2009 at 2:48 am

I have a Multiclip with 2 Angles and I want to add a 3rd Angle.

The 3rd Angle I want to add starts 5 minutes into the Multiclip I want to add it to.

When I add the 3rd angle to the Multiclip, FCP puts it at the beginning of the Multiclip – so it is 5 minutes ahead of where it should be.

The FCP User Manual says to Resync Angles by Scrubbing through them (Shift + Ctrl then dragging) after they have been added to the Multiclip, but this method would take forever to Resync something that is 5 minutes out of sync.

If anyone knows of a way to sync with In Points when adding the 3rd Angle or a faster way to Scrub I would really appreciate the help.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Put your clip into a new sequence with vie minutes of black at the head. You can, with some difficulty, use this as a nested multiclip but it’s far easier to just print it out self contained and reimport it.

Ah, good workaround; I didn’t even consider this.

It is surprising, though, that FCP doesn’t allow you to Sync to In Points when adding a new Multiclip Angle. I guess this is why we keep buying the upgrades.

    Thanks for your help!

The post is old, but I just ran into your same issue. Axillary Time Code will be your friend in this situation. Use Modify > Timecode to create Axillary time code for all your clips (including the master that should span then together). Once you have corresponding axillary time code, create a multiclip synced using that axillary time code and you’re set.

I had an interview where one tape had to be switched out while the other camera kept rolling. I’m not even going to go into why they didn’t just stop shooting while the tape switched, but that said, this was how I synced them together.

Thanks for the tip Richard, this sounds like the best method so far. I’ll definitely use it next time I run into this issue (which I will… sadly).

Well, as I predicted, I’ve run into the issue again. This time I’ve already placed markers all over multiclip that I need to add another angle to, so just deleting the multiclip and starting over using the Aux Timecode trick isn’t that appealing of an option.

Does anyone else have a method that will let me specify where in time the 3rd angle I’m adding to the multiclip will be placed?

    Thanks!
