I saw an event videographer yesterday using an audio cd recorder patched into the events sound board to capture the events audio. I was just wondering if others use this method to get audio for an event, and if so how do you go about syncing it to the video using Vegas?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Add your video+audio and then add the audio only. Look for a sudden spike in the waveform of both and sync on that. Then you can fine-tune the adjustment using teh 1 and 3 keys on the numeric keypad while listening to it play. It’s really an easy process.

It’s an easy process PROVIDING that your audio was captured using a digital device. Minidisc, CD, DAT, MP3 recorder, etc. These devices all have pretty consistent clock speeds. Audio captured on analog tape (i.e., a cassette recorder), will not maintain sync…the tape transport capstan isn’t accurate enough.

I use an i-river MP3 recorder with a lapel mic. It stays in sync for an entire wedding ceremony and the audio is really good quality. No worries about interfering with the church sound system. It works great in Vegas.

    Thanks for your input guys!

So, an MP3 recorder would work just as well as a cd reorder? Could this be hooked into the events sound board for a quality audio recording of all the mics being used? Then you just download into computer and on into Vegas?

    More feedback please!

    Thanks,
    Mike

Just another tidbit…do not stop either device (camera or audio recorder) once recording starts. Then once you sync up the audio and video, they will be in sync throughout the entire project. Then just group the two events and any editing you do will affect both events.

I usually hook up to mixer, capture in two track. If I can, I get my own mix. I use minidisc player. Some times I use ADATs and get multi track so I can fine tune and mix. Usually I master in Soundforge and then sync to video. You must be in control of your audio capture. If the sound tech does it he may not keep it running during break and you will lose sync.
