Symphony Nitris DX Closed captioning
I’m working on a Sypmhony Nitris DX (version 4.03). I’m trying to figure out how to encode closed captioning in my HD (1080i) projects as well as my SD (to digibeta) shows. Like with everyone else, I need to keep as much of the budget in-house. I see nothing in the Avid help or the avid site. I heard it was going to be possible in version 4 (one of the reasons I upgraded). Any help would be appreciated. Point me in a direction?

As far as I understand it, v4 re-implemented the feature of existing close-captioning being maintained whereas a couple previous versions on DN hardware, it was stripped. There have been no features added to encode new close captioning into the ancillary data (HANC/VANC) of the HD master.

You cannot encode it in Avid products at this point. You can keep it if you capture and spit back out without changing anything in the picture.
If you want to cheaply encode your CC files, FCP 7 + Kona 3 allow you to do that.

Not without software like Mac Caption. Final Cut Pro 7 does not have any caption authoring capability whatsoever.
