    I can’t remember having a problem with this before…

Using the character palette on a Mac I do not get the option to insert ANYthing. If I insert characters into a Pages document and then copy and paste into a text layer in AE, some symbols come through, most come across as question marks.

What am I missing / forgetting?

    What font are you using?

    For example:

I’ve found a checkmark “HEAVY CHECK MARK” in the character palette (Mac system, not AE). The system character palette indicates that it is a character in Zapf Dingbats.

Regardless of whether I have Zapf Dingbats selected in the AE palette, I am not able to insert the character from the system character palette.

If I switch to a word processor, I am immediately able to insert the character. I cannot, however, copy this into AE.

I’m sure if Mac works the same as a Windows machine but…

every character in a font has a alt/opt keystroke assigned to it.

For instance the british pound sign in ‘futura’ is ALT 0163 (probably OPT 0163 on a mac)

I use this all the time to get spanish characters ETC to appear in AE. In the windows os there is a program called character map, it will give you the map of a font and all of it’s keystrokes. I don’t know if mac has an equivalent program.

looking at zapf dingbats, the checkmarks should be the 3 key and the 4 key. I’m not sure why you can not get them to work in AE.
